The New England Patriots completed their fifth fully padded practice on Tuesday, moving drills outside the red zone and onto the fields behind Gillette Stadium. Veteran defensive linemen and edge rushers, including Dre’Mont Jones and Elijah Ponder, participated, while several players were listed as absent or limited, such as cornerback Carlton Davis and tight end Jack Westover.
In a two-minute drill, quarterback Drake Maye led the offense from the 20-yard line with 1:05 left, completing short passes to Mack Hollins and A.J. Brown before setting up a 54-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Andy Borregales. A similar drive later resulted in a 49-yard field goal by Borregales, who finished the practice perfect on five attempts, the longest from 52 yards.
Despite a thumb dislocation, wide receiver A.J. Brown participated fully, wearing a small bandage under his gloves. Coach Mike Vrabel said, "> I think he’s going to be okay," and noted the team’s light-hearted approach to the injury. Maye improved after a slow start, completing eight of nine throws and connecting with Brown four times on slant routes.
Kicker Borregales’ performance was praised by Vrabel, who highlighted the importance of consistency and noted the kicker’s 28-of-30 record in camp so far. On defense, rookie Gabe Jacas saw increased snaps, and Vrabel commented that the player is acclimating to special-team duties.
Other observations included Kyle Williams’ return, catching a pass from Tommy DeVito, and rookie cornerback Karon Prunty working on screen blocks. The Patriots will hold a walkthrough practice on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. ET.
