Patriots and Colts Finish Preseason Opener in 13-13 Tie

Summary

New England's preseason debut against Indianapolis ended in a scoreless draw, highlighting standout performances by receiver Kyle Williams and safety John Saunders Jr., while kicker Andy Borregales struggled with missed field goals.

New England Patriots opened their preseason at Gillette Stadium with a 13-13 tie against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night. The game featured a first-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Tommy DeVito to second-year wide receiver Kyle Williams, who also contributed a 25-yard gain later in the half. Williams' speed and ability to gain yards after contact were noted as promising for the Patriots' offense.

Rookie tight end Eli Raridon recorded one catch for eight yards, but displayed explosiveness on a bootleg play that was called back for an illegal man downfield and delivered a key block on the team's longest run. Safety John Saunders Jr. intercepted a pass from Indianapolis quarterback Riley Leonard and added two tackles for loss, earning a spot in the starting secondary.

Kicker Andy Borregales missed three of his five field-goal attempts, including kicks from 56, 55 and 49 yards, the last miss coming with 13 seconds left in regulation. Coach Mike Vrabel said, "We expect him to make them. That's pro football. They’re banging them in from 60 yards. They have two kickers on their roster. Andy knows we have to make those field goals."

Patriots guard depth also drew concern after backup interior lineman Ben Brown left with an injury and Andrew Rupcich required medical attention. Both James Hudson and Mehki Butler allowed sacks during the game.

Other notable contributions included rookie right tackle Caleb Lomu, who allowed a single pressure in 39 snaps, and defensive end Jacas, who recorded a sack and a run stop. Running back Jam Miller led the Patriots' rushing attack with 14 carries for 55 yards, while wide receiver Lan Larison added six receptions for 38 yards.

The game concluded without a winner, leaving both teams with areas to improve before the regular season begins.
