Rangers face trade-deadline decisions as playoff odds slip
Dallas Rangers have activated and designated pitcher Chris Martin and are evaluating offers for several players amid a decline in win probability and a looming trade deadline.
Dallas Rangers entered the trade deadline with a record of 2-2 in the American League West and a recent slide that cut their playoff probability from about 62% to 37% since the All-Star break. The club has activated right-hander Chris Martin from the injured list only to designate him for assignment, freeing a spot on the 40-man roster. Martin posted a 9.00 ERA this season and will receive $1 million in payments in 2028 and 2029.
The team added right-hander Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O'Hoppe earlier in the week, but analysts say the Rangers may either stand pat, trade marginal pieces, or consider larger moves involving stars such as shortstop Corey Seager, pitcher Jacob deGrom or outfielder Joc Pederson. Reports indicate interest in pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, who is under a $20 million contract for next season and carries a no-trade clause.
"The Rangers are willing to listen on MacKenzie Gore and Jacob Latz, but unless they are fully in sell mode, they are unlikely to move them for anything less than multiple valuable pieces," said MLB Network reporter J.P. Morosi.
"If the Rangers are indeed open for business, it’s important to consider the value of potential returns," added analyst Shawn McFarland, noting recent comparable trades such as Toronto’s acquisition of Kevin Gausman.
Other clubs are also active: the Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Taylor Ward from Baltimore and are fielding offers for pitcher George Kirby and outfielder Randy Arozarena, while the San Francisco Giants sent Luis Arraez to Philadelphia, a player once linked to Dallas but no longer a priority.
Rangers officials have not confirmed any specific deals, and the deadline at 5 p.m. remains the window for any transactions.
