MLB trade deadline approaches with several pitchers and position players on the market

With one week left before the August 3 trade deadline, teams such as Detroit, San Diego, Washington and Toronto are evaluating key players like Michael Skubal, Blake Miller and Luis Robert Jr. for possible deals.

The MLB trade deadline is set for 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 3, leaving clubs a narrow window to negotiate moves. Detroit’s left-hander Michael Skubal, who has returned to form after elbow surgery, is the most discussed name, with the Rays, Brewers, Braves, Yankees, Phillies and Cubs reportedly interested. The Tigers, currently 50-56, could either acquire a reliever, trade Skubal and other pending free agents, or pursue a mixed package that adds a controllable starter and prospects, according to The Athletic.

San Diego’s front office, led by AJ Preller, appears unlikely to move closer Blake Miller before the deadline, though starter Michael King and reliever Adrian Morejon could be offered for controllable pieces. Mariners, Pirates and Yankees are cited as top suitors for Miller if he becomes available.

Washington’s shortstop Luis Abrams, under team control through 2028, is attracting interest from the Yankees, Brewers and Red Sox, while the Nationals remain open to offers despite not actively shopping him.

The Mets are expected to be sellers, with reports that they could execute at least six trades. Potential moves include relievers Freddy Peralta, A.J. Minter, Brooks Raley, Tyrone Taylor and possibly starter Luke Weaver, while shortstop Francisco Lindor is considered unlikely to be dealt due to his contract and no-trade clause.

Catching depth is a need for several contenders. With Shea Langeliers injured and Hunter Goodman unlikely to be moved, the Orioles’ Adley Rutschman and Twins’ Alex Jeffers are among the few viable options.

The Giants have confirmed they are sellers, with outfielder Alex Arraez and starter Robbie Ray identified as primary trade chips. Other names such as Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee are also mentioned.

Los Angeles Angels candidates include shortstop Jo Adell, pitcher José Soriano, and Reid Detmers, all under team control beyond 2028. The Red Sox have shown interest in shortstop Luis Neto.

Toronto, trailing in the AL East, is rumored to be preparing to sell veterans on expiring contracts, including pitcher Kevin Gausman, outfielder George Springer, pitcher Shane Bieber, infielder Daulton Varsho and pitcher Max Scherzer. Gausman has expressed a desire to stay with the Blue Jays, but several clubs are reportedly monitoring his status.
