Mariners trade Luis Castillo to White Sox for three players

Summary

Seattle sent right-hander Luis Castillo to Chicago in exchange for reliever Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones and catching prospect Boston Smith.

Seattle announced Tuesday that it has dealt starting pitcher Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox for three players. The White Sox will receive Castillo, who is under a contract through 2027 with a vesting option for 2028, while Seattle will acquire right-hander Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones and catching prospect Boston Smith.

Domínguez, who is under contract for the remainder of this season and the 2025 season at a salary of about $10.5 million, carries a mutual option for 2028 with a $2 million buyout. The reliever has struggled this year, posting a career-high walk rate and a high percentage of fly balls that have resulted in home runs, though he continues to generate strikeouts and can reach the upper 90s with his fastball.

Jones, a former second-round pick who debuted with the Rockies in 2023, spent the 2024 season with Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate. He is expected to provide outfield depth for Seattle’s Tacoma club.

Smith, ranked as Chicago’s No. 15 prospect, is a left-handed catcher who also plays the outfield. After advancing rapidly from Single-A to Double-A in his first professional season, he is noted for a high walk rate and solid power potential.

The trade removes Castillo’s contract from Seattle’s payroll and adds a mix of major-league and prospect talent, while the White Sox acquire a rotation arm as they pursue a division title.
