White Sox Look to Reinforce Pitching After Playoff Run

Summary

Chicago's postseason appearance highlighted pitching deficiencies, prompting General Manager Chris Getz to consider roster moves and contract decisions ahead of the 2027 season.

The Chicago White Sox secured a wild-card series win over the Houston Astros, becoming the first club to reach the playoffs after three straight 100-loss seasons. After taking a 2-0 lead in the ALDS, the team was eliminated by the Cleveland Guardians, prompting questions about the next steps for the roster.

General manager Chris Getz said the priority will be improving the pitching staff, noting that the rotation was the team's weakest link throughout the year. Sean Burke emerged as the most reliable starter, while Davis Martin struggled after a strong start, and Shane Smith, the 2026 Opening Day pitcher, saw his performance decline sharply and spent most of the season in Triple-A.

In response, Chicago acquired Luis Castillo from Seattle, assuming his $22.75 million contract through 2027. The trade also sent minor-league catcher Boston Smith to the Mariners and off-loaded Seranthony Domínguez's contract. Castillo posted a 5.06 ERA in 20 appearances after the deal but later moved to the bullpen and was shut down with a shoulder impingement, raising concerns about the value of his contract.

The team’s guaranteed payroll for 2027 totals $71.25 million, with total future commitments of $73.25 million. Arbitration-eligible players include Joey Bart, Huascar Brazobán, Brenton Doyle, Miguel Vargas, Chris Murphy and Jordan Leasure, with Bart, Murphy and Leasure listed as non-tender candidates. Free agents entering the offseason include Erick Fedde, Sean Newcomb, Trevor Richards, Randal Grichuk, Jake Rogers and Tommy Pham.

Getz indicated that the White Sox may explore trade options for Castillo if his performance does not improve, while also assessing the depth of their rotation ahead of Opening Day.
