MLB trade deadline sees Yankees eye Garcia, Dodgers acquire Skubal, Rays add Peralta

Summary

The Yankees are reportedly pursuing Nationals infielder Luis García Jr., while the Dodgers trade for ace pitcher Tarik Skubal and the Rays acquire Freddy Peralta from the Mets amid several other deadline moves.

The New York Yankees are reportedly working to acquire Washington Nationals infielder Luis García Jr., who was scratched from a recent game and is posting a .283/.313/.560 line with 23 home runs this season. García, 26, has primarily played first base for the Nationals but also has experience at shortstop and second base.

Toronto added former Cubs starter Jameson Taillon and cash considerations to its roster, completing a trade announced on Sunday. Taillon, 34, posted a 5.92 ERA in 15 starts for Chicago before being designated for assignment.

In Detroit, the Tigers completed a deal sending two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In return, Detroit received outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith, according to sources.

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets, filling a rotation spot after an injury to Shane McClanahan. Peralta, who struggled with a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts for the Mets, is expected to start the second or third playoff game if the Rays reach the postseason.

Seattle traded right-hander Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox for reliever Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones and prospect Boston Smith. Castillo, who has a 5.06 ERA this season, will be under club control through 2027 with an option for 2028.

These moves reflect teams’ efforts to address pitching needs and add depth as the 2026 trade deadline approaches.
