Spin-off shows alternate-universe version of Penny as resistance leader

Resumen

In the second episode of HBO Max’s "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," a new version of Penny appears as a guerrilla leader in a multiverse storyline.

HBO Max’s spin-off series "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" introduced an alternate version of Penny in its second episode, aired Thursday night. The episode follows comic-book store owner Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, as he travels through parallel realities after destroying a multiverse device originally built by Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter.

In one reality, humans wear neck implants that deliver electric shocks during arguments, leading the group to a 30-month re-education facility. After completing the program, they are abducted to an abandoned warehouse where Penny, portrayed by Kaley Cuoco, emerges with brunette hair and a role as a guerrilla leader fighting an AI-controlled regime alongside her former boyfriend Zack.

"A big part of it was offering them a challenge to do something entirely different," co-creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre told Variety, noting that the redesign of Penny was planned from the start and that multiverse settings allow characters to reappear with new backstories.

The series, which continues the universe of "The Big Bang Theory" (2007-2019), airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
