WNBA star Brittney Griner files for divorce in Georgia
WNBA player Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife Cherelle in Fulton County, citing an irretrievably broken marriage and seeking joint custody of their two-year-old son.
Brittney Griner, a center for the Connecticut Sun, submitted divorce paperwork in Fulton County on Thursday, court records show. The filing lists the marriage as “irretrievably broken” and notes a separation date of July 24. Griner, 35, is requesting joint legal custody of the couple’s son, Bash, who was born in July 2024.
Griner and Cherelle, a 33-year-old attorney, were married in June 2018 after meeting at Baylor University. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported the filing.
Cherelle previously advocated for Griner’s release after the basketball star was detained by Russian authorities in February 2022 on drug-related charges. Griner was sentenced to nine years in Russia but was freed in December 2022 as part of a prisoner exchange.
Griner’s earlier marriage to former WNBA player Glory Johnson ended after 28 days in 2015; Johnson gave birth to twin daughters in October 2015.
