WNBA star Brittney Griner files for divorce after eight years of marriage
Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner has filed for divorce in Georgia, seeking joint custody of their 2024-born son, while the couple has been separated since July.
Olympic gold-medalist and WNBA center Brittney Griner filed for divorce in Fulton County, Georgia, stating that her marriage to attorney Cherelle Griner is "irretrievably broken," according to court documents. The filing indicates the couple has been living apart since July 24 and that Griner is requesting joint custody of their son, born in 2024.
"This is a matter we hope the parties can resolve privately," a lawyer for Brittney Griner said, adding that there is no further comment at this time.
Representatives for Cherelle Griner did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The two were married in June 2018 after meeting at Baylor University, where Griner was a top scorer in NCAA women's basketball. Cherelle Griner previously advocated for her wife's release from Russian detention in 2022.
Griner's earlier marriage to former WNBA player Glory Johnson in 2015 ended in an annulment after less than a month; she later paid child support for twins conceived during that brief union.
