Palo Alto police say clerical error led to misattributed fault in Kyle Shanahan crash

摘要

Police confirmed a data entry mistake incorrectly placed blame on another driver in the collision involving 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, and the report is being corrected.

Palo Alto police officials said a clerical error caused a state database report to list the other driver as at fault in the July 14 collision involving San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Lt. Nicolas Martinez told reporters that Shanahan’s own statement was accurate and that the error occurred when the incident was entered into the police system.

"I can confirm that Kyle Shanahan’s statement that he provided is correct and that he was found at fault for the collision," Martinez said. "There was a clerical error in the preparation of the report that was transmitted to the State database. We are in the process of correcting that error. It is the officer’s discretion at the scene of the collision as to whether they issue a citation to either party. It is not uncommon for officers to elect to not issue a citation to either party involved in a collision. Neither party in this situation was provided preferential treatment."

The correction comes after the incident was not publicly disclosed until July 25, when the 49ers began training camp. Police said the delay in updating the record was unrelated to any special treatment of Shanahan.
