Vikings quarterback competition appears to favor Kyler Murray, analysts say

Summary

ESPN analyst Adam Schefter and Vikings receiver Adam Thielen indicated that Kyler Murray is the frontrunner for the starting quarterback role, while coach Kevin O'Connell said both players will receive reps in training camp.

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter said that when veteran receiver Adam Thielen predicts the starting job will go to Kyler Murray, the Vikings are likely to follow that assessment. Schefter added that Murray will retain the position unless training-camp reports highlight significant improvement from rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Thielen acknowledged Murray’s current advantage but noted that McCarthy could still earn the role if he demonstrates the performance that was lacking last season. Former Broncos defensive back Domonique Foxworth echoed the view that a strong showing by Murray would likely end McCarthy’s chances.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters that both quarterbacks will receive first-team and second-team repetitions during camp, providing multiple layers for evaluation. Murray, who spent seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, accumulated 121 passing touchdowns, 32 rushing touchdowns and helped the team reach the 2021 playoffs. McCarthy missed the 2024 season with a knee injury and posted a mixed performance in his first start in 2025, recording 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while the team finished 9-8 overall after his season ended with a hand fracture.
