Giants place Casey Schmitt on 10-day injured list after meniscus tear

Summary

Infielder Casey Schmitt was moved to the 10-day injured list with a left meniscus tear, and the team called up Osleivis Basabe as a replacement.

The San Francisco Giants placed infielder Casey Schmitt on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday after an MRI confirmed a torn meniscus in his left knee. Schmitt, who has been a key contributor this season, was injured Monday night while attempting to stop after an aggressive turn around first base in the second inning and was helped off the field.

The team promoted infielder Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the roster spot. No timetable has been set for Schmitt’s return.

"Hasn’t been dictated yet," manager Tony Vitello said before the game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Oracle Park. "He’s back there doing what he can. Still in the early stages of knowing exactly what will happen but obviously he’s going to miss a good chunk of time."

Schmitt entered the season with career highs in several offensive categories, including 21 home runs, 55 RBIs, 47 runs, 105 hits and a .271 batting average over 97 games. The injury adds to recent setbacks for the Giants, which also include outfielder Harrison Bader’s foot injury from a scooter accident and pitcher Trevor McDonald’s upcoming UCL reconstruction surgery.

"Found out about it Sunday," Vitello said of Bader’s incident. "My only concern with him while we talked was ‘Are you OK?’ He didn’t provide a lot of details to me."
