Giants place infielder Casey Schmitt on 10-day injured list with torn meniscus

Summary

San Francisco moved Casey Schmitt to the 10-day IL after a left-knee meniscus tear, promoting Osleivis Basabe to the active roster.

San Francisco announced that infielder/outfielder Casey Schmitt has been placed on the 10-day injured list after doctors diagnosed a torn meniscus in his left knee. The injury occurred during the team's recent win over Milwaukee when Schmitt made a hard stop at first base and his knee buckled, requiring a pinch-runner. Manager Tony Vitello said the club sent Schmitt for imaging following the incident.

The Giants added 25-year-old Osleivis Basabe to the roster in Schmitt's place. Basabe, who was previously selected from the 40-man roster, has not required a corresponding roster move. He previously appeared in 31 games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023, posting a .218/.277/.310 line, and has spent the past two seasons at Triple-A Sacramento, where he is hitting .268/.344/.388 with five home runs and 12 steals in 75 games. He is eligible to play both middle-infield positions and third base and retains a minor-league option.

Schmitt, a fourth-year utility player, entered the season with a career-best .271/.301/.483 slash line and 21 home runs over 409 plate appearances. He has been used at third base while Matt Chapman recovers from injury, and the Giants had anticipated his role at second base pending a possible trade involving Luis Arraez. Christian Koss, who pinch-ran for Schmitt, is slated to start at third base in the upcoming game.

The move removes Schmitt from any immediate trade discussions, as he remains under team control through 2029. The Giants are expected to keep him on the roster and consider him for everyday second base once Arraez is dealt.
