Rams coach says Aaron Donald is evaluating a possible return

Summary

Sean McVay said the Los Angeles Rams are in contact with former defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who is assessing his physical readiness before deciding whether to come out of retirement for the 2026 season.

The Los Angeles Rams began training camp without former defensive tackle Aaron Donald on the roster, but head coach Sean McVay confirmed the team remains in dialogue with the three-time Defensive Player of the Year about a potential comeback. McVay told reporters the Rams are taking the situation "a day at a time" as Donald evaluates his physical condition.

"He is going through his process. He is putting himself in a position to make a decision and he’s earned the right to be able to do that. If that is something he wants to do, we’re going to try to make that happen," McVay said.

McVay added that any return would depend on how Donald’s body responds to training and the demands of an NFL season. He indicated that the timing of a possible return has not been set and will be announced when more information is available.

"We’ll see how his body’s responding to some of the training and the way he puts himself through the paces to know what it looks and feels like to take on what the rigors of an NFL season entail. If he’s feeling good about that, we’ll move forward," McVay said.
