Rams Coach Says Aaron Donald Could Return as Team Completes Defensive Overhaul
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay indicated that former defensive star Aaron Donald is considering an unretirement, while the team adds Myles Garrett and new cornerbacks to bolster its roster.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay told The Ringer that the team is prepared to welcome former defensive tackle Aaron Donald back if he decides to resume his career. Donald, who retired in March 2024 after ten seasons with the Rams, has been seen training at the team’s facility and is reportedly evaluating a return.
The Rams entered the offseason by acquiring two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from Cleveland in a trade that included multiple future draft picks and defensive rookie Jared Verse. The roster also gained Super Bowl-winning cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, addressing a secondary that struggled in the NFC championship game last season.
McVay said, "I told him, ‘You went out on your own terms, and I think it’s important that you come back on your terms too.’" The coaching staff is reportedly planning how to manage Donald’s snap count, with general manager Les Snead noting that any initial workload would be limited to keep the player fresh.
If Donald returns, he would join a defense that now features Garrett on the edge and a deeper talent pool, potentially reducing the need for him to face frequent double-teams. Garrett expressed enthusiasm about the prospect, saying he would be excited to be Donald’s teammate.
Financial considerations remain, as Donald has roughly $25 million left on his previous contract. However, the Rams’ recent salary-cap moves, including the Garrett acquisition, suggest the organization could restructure the deal if needed.
The team expects to make a decision after the first few weeks of training camp, with Donald’s status likely clarified before the squad returns to its Woodland Hills facility.
