FDA panel to review safety of seven popular wellness peptides

सारांश

The FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee will consider whether seven peptides marketed for weight loss, sleep and other uses can be produced by licensed pharmacies, amid concerns over limited clinical evidence and potential conflicts of interest on the panel.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee is set to meet on Thursday and Friday to evaluate whether seven peptide compounds can be compounded by licensed pharmacies for patients with prescriptions. The peptides, which include BPC-157, TB-500 and KPV, are promoted for a range of conditions such as ulcerative colitis, wound healing, obesity, migraines, chronic pain, insomnia and opioid withdrawal.

While peptide-based medicines like GLP-1 drugs have gained mainstream acceptance, the compounds under review are largely sold through wellness clinics and online influencers. Demand has risen sharply, driven in part by social-media promotion and endorsements from public figures, including health activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who claims personal benefit from their use.

The FDA has expressed doubts about the safety and efficacy of the seven peptides, noting a lack of robust human clinical trials and concerns about product quality, stability and consistency. In documents released ahead of the meeting, agency officials said the evidence supporting the compounds is limited.

Industry representatives argue that allowing licensed compounding pharmacies to produce the peptides would increase oversight and ensure quality standards. However, the advisory panel’s composition has drawn scrutiny; half of its 14 members have ties to businesses or clinics that sell peptide therapies, and one member’s family operates a pharmacy that compounds medications. The Department of Health and Human Services said all members passed the required ethics review and that anyone failing to meet standards was excluded.

Although the committee’s recommendations are not binding, they are expected to influence the FDA’s final decision on how to regulate these widely marketed wellness products.
