Sony and Alamo Drafthouse to Restore and Reopen Los Angeles' Cinerama Dome by 2028

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced plans to restore the Cinerama Dome, a landmark Los Angeles theater that has been closed since 2020, and to reopen it in 2028. The company, which acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas in 2024, will also revive the adjacent 14-screen former ArcLight complex as an Alamo Drafthouse location, preserving its 35mm and 70mm capabilities while adding the chain’s dine-in service.

Renovations are slated to begin next month and will continue through 2028. Sony will operate the venues under a lease with the property’s owner, Decurion Corporation’s Robertson Property Group, and has pledged to keep the Dome’s iconic exterior branding and historic name.

"The Dome has hosted generations of unforgettable movie moments. Our goal is to preserve its legendary history while ensuring it remains vibrant now and far into the future," said Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony’s motion picture group.

"There is no moviegoing destination anywhere in the world that commands the affection, history, and cultural significance of the Cinerama Dome. It represents the kind of singular experience we value and champion," added Ravi Ahuja, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann said the restored venues will serve as the chain’s West Coast flagship, offering repertory screenings, filmmaker series, premieres and special events, though the Dome will not operate as a dine-in theater.

The Cinerama Dome, opened in 1963 with its 86-foot panoramic screen, was previously one of the city’s highest-grossing multiplexes and a frequent site for high-profile premieres. The theater’s previous owners filed for bankruptcy in 2021, leaving the venue shuttered for several years.
