Boeing Defense Workers in Missouri and Illinois Initiate Strike After Contract Rejection

Summary

Over 3,200 Boeing defense workers in Missouri and Illinois have commenced a strike following the rejection of a proposed four-year labor contract.

Over 3,200 unionized Boeing defense workers in Missouri and Illinois have begun a strike after rejecting the company's latest four-year labor contract proposal. The workers, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 837, are employed at Boeing facilities in St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri, as well as Mascoutah, Illinois. They are responsible for assembling and maintaining military aircraft, including F-15 and F/A-18 fighter jets, as well as missile and defense systems.

The strike commenced at midnight on Monday, following the union's overwhelming vote to reject the proposed contract. IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli stated, :

"IAM District 837 members build the aircraft and defense systems that keep our country safe. They deserve nothing less than a contract that keeps their families secure and recognizes their unmatched expertise."

Boeing expressed disappointment over the rejection, noting that the offer included a 40% average wage increase and addressed concerns regarding alternative work schedules. Dan Gillian, Boeing's Vice President of Air Dominance and Senior St. Louis Site Executive, stated that the company is prepared for the strike and has implemented contingency plans to ensure continued support for customers.

This labor action follows a previous strike in 2024, when over 33,000 Boeing machinists walked off the job, resulting in significant financial losses for the company. The current strike underscores ongoing tensions between Boeing and its workforce regarding compensation and working conditions.
