Trump hosts White House event ahead of inaugural Freedom 250 IndyCar race
President Donald Trump held a White House showcase with IndyCar drivers and industry leaders to preview the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, scheduled for Aug. 22-23 on a temporary street circuit around the National Mall.
President Donald J. Trump convened a "Freedom 250 Grand Prix Showcase" at the White House on Monday, marking a 41-day countdown to the first IndyCar Series race on a temporary 1.66-mile street circuit that will loop around the National Mall and down Pennsylvania Avenue. The race, slated for Aug. 22-23, is intended to coincide with the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations of American freedom.
The event was attended by IndyCar drivers David Malukas, Alex Palou and Felix Rosenqvist, as well as motorsport executives Roger Penske, Bud Denker of Penske Corporation, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks and General Motorsports president Mark Royce. Near the end of the showcase, Malukas performed a brief pit-stop demonstration in an Indy car.
"I'm thrilled to be here with some of the most extraordinary figures in the history of motorsports and any sport," Trump said, adding that the upcoming race would be "one of the most unforgettable racing events the world has ever seen."
"Unprecedented events will take place next month right here in our nation's capital on August 22nd and 23rd," he continued, noting that cars could exceed 190 miles per hour on Pennsylvania Avenue and praising the coordination led by Secretary Duffy.
"I think we're fortunate to have the most important office in the world give us the green light and then the checkered flag to have this event in August," IndyCar Series owner Roger Penske said, citing more than 250,000 registrations and free admission for up to 100,000 spectators each day.
"Within 24 hours of this idea changing onto the city streets, we had an executive order in my inbox to review. And then four days later, I was in his office here to sign it," Bud Denker, chairman of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, explained, highlighting the rapid executive action and collaboration with broadcasters.
Organizers anticipate the event will showcase high-performance technology and attract significant public interest, positioning the Freedom 250 alongside the sport's most prestigious races.
