President Trump to ride motorcade on pre-race lap for IndyCar Freedom 250 in Washington

Summary

The White House says President Donald Trump will lead a motorcade around the Freedom 250 Grand Prix circuit in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 23 as part of the event celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The NTT IndyCar Series will hold the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on a 1.7-mile street circuit that includes part of Pennsylvania Avenue and passes the U.S. Capitol. The race is scheduled for Aug. 23 in Washington, D.C., and organizers have announced that President Donald Trump’s motorcade will complete a pre-race lap of honor.

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said the president’s participation is intended to highlight the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations and described the event as “one of the greatest and most iconic races in history.”

Trump signed an executive order in January directing federal agencies to cooperate with the D.C. mayor’s office on the circuit’s design and construction, making the race a late addition to the IndyCar calendar. IndyCar drivers Alex Palou, Felix Rosenqvist and David Malukas have visited the White House to promote the event, with Malukas taking part in a pit-stop demonstration at the White House.

Practice and qualifying are set for Saturday, with the 250-mile race slated to start at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. Pre-race coverage will begin at 11:30 a.m. ET on FOX.
