Summary

Governor Henry McMaster named Darline Graham Nordone, sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to serve the remainder of Graham's Senate term until January 3, after a recommendation from President Donald Trump.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Republican senator, to fill the balance of Lindsey Graham's six-year Senate term, which ends on Jan. 3. The appointment follows a recommendation posted by President Donald Trump on his social-media platform.

"Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, would be a fantastic pick to serve out the remainder of the Senate term," Sen. Tim Scott wrote on X, adding that she understands Graham’s commitment to family and the state.

McMaster said the law required him to name a replacement and expressed that it was an honor to do so. Nordone thanked the governor, describing the role as an honor and noting her brother’s lifelong support.

Graham died Saturday at age 71 from a ruptured aorta linked to arterial hardening, according to his office. Under South Carolina law, candidates have one week beginning July 21 to file for a special primary scheduled for Aug. 11.

Potential contenders for the seat include businessman Mark Lynch, who is investing $5 million in his campaign, Rep. Nancy Mace, who is weighing a run, and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, who has received numerous inquiries about a possible candidacy.
