Rep. Ralph Norman declared his candidacy for the special primary to fill the late Senator Lindsey Graham's seat, acknowledging President Trump's endorsement of Graham's sister.
South Carolina Republican Rep. Ralph Norman said Saturday he will run in the special primary election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Norman, who represents the state’s 5th district, told Fox News that he intends to pursue the "SAVE America Act" and support efforts to eliminate the filibuster.
He noted that President Donald Trump has endorsed Senator Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham’s sister, who was appointed by Governor Henry McMaster to serve the remainder of the term. Norman said he sought Trump’s blessing but will continue his campaign despite the endorsement.
Other potential Republican contenders, including Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Rep. Nancy Mace, have been mentioned but have not filed. Candidates must submit paperwork by July 21, and the primary is scheduled for Aug. 11.
