Microsoft to cut 3,200 Xbox jobs in largest restructuring of the division

Resumen

Microsoft announced a plan to eliminate 3,200 positions at Xbox over the next fiscal year, describing it as the most significant restructuring in the unit's history, as analysts cite rising hardware costs and shifting consumer attention as drivers.

Microsoft will reduce its Xbox workforce by about 3,200 jobs during the upcoming fiscal year, calling the move the most significant restructuring in the division’s history. The cuts are part of a broader reset that follows a decline in player numbers and playing hours, as well as lower profit margins compared with rivals.

The layoffs affect employees across the division, including former game tester Autumn Mitchell, who said the news felt like “having the wind knocked out of you.” Industry observers note that the gaming sector is confronting new challenges such as competition for user attention from social media and artificial-intelligence applications. > "The more our time gets divided up, the less time we have to spend on gaming, and therefore, the less money we're inclined to spend on gaming," said Gil Luria, head of technology research at D.A. Davidson.

Microsoft President Brad Smith acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, emphasizing the need for the business to stay financially healthy. Analysts point to rising hardware costs driven by higher chip demand, tariffs, and fuel prices as factors squeezing margins. > "The current layoffs are an unfortunate mix of both internal inefficiencies and…this apocalyptic degree of hardware prices going up because of the AI frenzy," said Joost van Dreunen, a professor at New York University.

Some employees argue that cutting staff may not address underlying issues, suggesting that greater input from developers could improve the unit’s performance. A few experts speculate that Microsoft could eventually spin off Xbox or sell parts of the business, a scenario van Dreunen says may emerge within the next two years.
