Airlines Extend European Routes into Off-Season as U.S. Travelers Seek Alternatives

Summary

U.S. airlines are lengthening flights to European destinations beyond traditional summer months to capture demand from travelers avoiding heat, crowds and high prices, while managing rising fuel costs.

U.S. carriers are adding or extending flights to European cities well beyond the usual summer window as more American travelers look for off-peak options to avoid heat, crowds and higher prices. American Airlines now operates a New York-Edinburgh service from March, United Airlines will keep its Newark-Palermo route through mid-December, and Delta plans to run its Minneapolis-Rome flight into January, longer than in previous years.

The shift comes as jet-fuel costs are projected to reduce airline profits by about $100 billion this year, according to the International Air Transport Association. Executives say the broader seasonal demand helps offset some of those expenses. Delta President Peter Carter noted that “there are so many places you can go in Europe year-round and still have an amazing experience,” while United’s senior vice president Patrick Quayle described a “creep of the seasons” as shoulder periods blend into full-season travel.

Airlines are also adjusting maintenance and crew schedules to keep aircraft in service during the traditionally lucrative summer months. Delta’s vice president of international network planning Jeff Arinder said the carrier is now performing more maintenance in summer to preserve planes for the fall, aiming to “flatten out our seasonality as much as possible.”

Higher fares persist, though some routes show moderation. A round-trip flight to Athens was $988 on June 22, up from $810 a year earlier but down from $1,350 two months prior, according to flight-tracking data. The trend reflects airlines’ efforts to pass rising costs to customers while still attracting high-spending travelers.

Changing travel patterns are driven by factors such as extreme heat waves in Europe, concerns about overcrowding, and more flexible work arrangements that allow younger travelers and families to travel outside the traditional summer window. United’s extension of its Newark-Palermo service into December is described as a “safe bet” to capture demand during the island’s cooler, less crowded shoulder season, while Delta plans to keep its New York-Catania flights operating into early January.

Industry observers note that airlines must consider year-round utilization of expensive wide-body aircraft when planning purchases, and carriers like Alaska Airlines and American Airlines are similarly expanding or adjusting their trans-Atlantic schedules to meet evolving demand.
