Tasmanian seal Neil's fame raises safety concerns

Summary

A 5-year-old male elephant seal weighing about 1,000 kg has returned to Tasmania, attracting large social-media attention while causing property damage and prompting officials to warn against close human interaction.

A 5-year-old male elephant seal weighing roughly 1,000 kg has made its biannual return to the Tasmanian coast, drawing a social-media following that exceeds the state’s human population. The seal, known locally as Neil, has damaged traffic bollards, signage and fences as it moves across town streets, and often lies in the middle of roads, halting traffic.

Scientists note that juvenile male elephant seals normally practice dominance behaviors with peers, but Neil is the only male of its species to appear on Tasmania’s shores, leading it to interact with vehicles instead. "Humans got rid of those animals and now maybe they are coming back and repopulating areas that they were previously seen in," said elephant seal researcher Sophia Volzke of the University of Tasmania.

Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment has asked the public to keep a distance from the animal. > "Neil’s fame is a bit of a double-edged sword," said department spokesperson Kris Carlyon at a news conference, adding that people have been attempting to hold infants near the seal for photographs. Carlyon warned that increased interaction could force rangers into risky relocations and cited a 2023 incident in Norway where a popular walrus was euthanised after safety concerns grew.

Officials also cautioned that while Neil could grow to about 5 meters in length and triple his current weight, roughly 90 % of male elephant seals die before reaching breeding age. The seal continues to occupy a sidewalk spot, occasionally resting near traffic cones, much to the amusement of online followers. Local resident Dale Creamer described the situation as a unique attraction, saying, "He’s one of our biggest exports at the moment. It’s Neil’s world and we’re just living in it."
