Sony PlayStation to Stop Producing New Physical Game Discs by 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment said on Wednesday that it will discontinue the production of new video game discs by January 2028. The move, outlined in a company blog post, follows Rockstar Games' recent decision to release "Grand Theft Auto 6" exclusively in digital format. Sony noted that sales of physical game discs have been falling, a trend similar to declines seen in home-video and music sales, although vinyl records have experienced a resurgence. The blog post stated, > "This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs," and added that the company will continue to allocate resources toward innovation in game access and maintain options for purchasing through retailers or the PlayStation Store. The announcement said the change will not affect any titles scheduled for release before the January 2028 deadline.
