Sony to cease production of new PlayStation game discs from 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment said on Wednesday that all new PlayStation games released after January 2028 will be offered only through the PlayStation Store and other digital channels, ending the production of physical discs for future titles. The company said the decision reflects a shift in consumer behavior toward digital purchases. Existing games and titles slated for disc release before the cutoff will remain unaffected. Sony added that the move will allow it to align its resources with current player preferences while still providing options to buy games from retailers or directly from the PlayStation Store. > "We'll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that's at retailers or PlayStation Store," the company said.
