Brother of Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell charged with murder in mother’s death

Summary

Ciarre Campbell was arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife after his mother, 71-year-old Nateal Campbell, was found dead in their Buckhead townhome.

Fulton County jail records show that Ciarre Campbell, the brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell, was booked after midnight on murder, aggravated assault and knife-possession charges following the death of their mother, Nateal Campbell, 71, at a Buckhead townhome. Police were dispatched for a welfare check after a family member reported concerns; officers discovered the victim’s body at the residence. Lieutenant Christopher Butler noted prior calls to the address in April related to a possible arson incident and mentioned indications of mental-health issues involving an individual, though he did not identify who made the welfare-check call. The official cause of death has not been released, but a warrant alleges that Ciarre Campbell cut his mother’s neck. Defense attorney Jay Abt told Channel 2 investigators that his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty and requested privacy for the family. The Campbell family released a statement to ESPN/NFL Network expressing sorrow and asking for privacy while the investigation continues. Calais Campbell’s Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, created in memory of their father, lists his mother and siblings as co-founders.
