Brother of NFL player Calais Campbell booked on murder charges after mother found dead in Buckhead

Summary

Atlanta police have booked Ciarre Campbell on murder, aggravated assault and gun possession charges after his 71-year-old mother, the mother of Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell, was found dead in a Buckhead townhouse.

Atlanta police are investigating the death of a 71-year-old woman whose body was discovered during a welfare check at a Buckhead townhome on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as the mother of Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell, a former Atlanta Falcon.

Police detained the victim’s son, Ciarre Campbell, for questioning and later booked him on charges of murder, aggravated assault and illegal gun possession. Fulton County jail records confirm the booking occurred after midnight.

Lt. Christopher Butler said a review of the property’s history showed prior calls in April related to a possible arson incident and indicated there may have been mental-health concerns involving an individual at the location.

Defense attorney Jay Abt, representing Ciarre Campbell, said law enforcement has obtained search warrants for the home, clothing and DNA samples. He declined to comment on his client’s living arrangements, mental-health status or prior arrests, emphasizing that his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty. > "We vigorously protest his innocence. We look forward to his day in court. I’m honored to defend him and, most importantly, the Campbell family, I’m asking on their behalf that the public respect their privacy at this time," Abt said.
