Three-Year-Old Rescued After Six Days of Earthquake Search in Venezuela
Rescuers saved a toddler from the rubble of a collapsed building in La Guaira state, the only survivor found on the sixth day of the response to twin earthquakes that killed over 1,900 people.
Rescuers pulled a toddler from the Los Corales Garden building in La Guaira state early Tuesday, marking the first survivor recovered on the sixth day of the search after twin earthquakes struck Venezuela last Wednesday. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced the rescue via a Telegram message and said the child, identified as Klieber Moran, was taken to a health centre in Caracas for treatment.
The earthquakes, measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, collapsed numerous structures and left thousands trapped, officials said. National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez told a televised audience, >We must hold on to the hope of continuing to find people alive beneath the rubble. Early this morning, a two-year-old boy was rescued and is currently receiving care at a health centre in Caracas.<
A United Nations Children’s Fund shipment of 47 metric tons of emergency supplies arrived in the country on Tuesday, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, adding the kits include medical items for childbirth, newborn care and disease prevention. The government reports more than 1,900 deaths and over 10,000 injuries, though experts warn the actual death toll may be higher as morgues struggle with the ongoing recovery.
