Three-Year-Old Rescued Six Days After Venezuela Earthquakes

Résumé

A Jordanian rescue team saved a three-year-old boy from rubble in La Guaira six days after the deadly quakes, while UN agencies warn of severe humanitarian needs.

A Jordanian civil defence team rescued a three-year-old boy, identified as Klieber Morán, from the wreckage in La Guaira state six days after the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck Venezuela. The child received first-aid treatment and was taken to a hospital in Caracas, where his vital signs were reported as stable.

The death toll from the quakes has risen to 1,943, with more than 10,000 injured and tens of thousands still missing. Satellite analysis by NASA estimates that nearly 59,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed.

Venezuelan Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said the rescue demonstrated that survivors could still be found, and noted that shelters are operating in La Guaira and other affected states. International teams from the United States, Mexico and other countries continue to search the debris using trained dogs and heavy equipment.

The United Nations warned that tens of thousands of people urgently need food, shelter and medical assistance. The UN refugee agency highlighted rising community tensions over limited aid distribution, and the World Health Organization cautioned about an increased risk of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks. A UN spokesperson announced the arrival of a 47-tonne shipment of humanitarian supplies, including emergency health kits and newborn care items.
