Big Tech Turns to Bond Markets for AI Expansion as Fed Signals Higher Rates

सारांश

Major technology firms are issuing billions of dollars in debt to fund AI data-center projects, while the Federal Reserve's recent hawkish stance raises the cost of borrowing.

Technology companies are increasingly relying on bond markets to finance artificial-intelligence infrastructure, a shift highlighted by Nvidia's $25 billion investment-grade bond sale, the largest since 2021. The chipmaker filed to issue the debt for general corporate purposes, including refinancing, and expanded the offering after receiving more than $85 billion in investor orders, according to the Financial Times.

Morgan Stanley estimates that AI-related global debt issuance could reach nearly $570 billion in 2026, up from about $236 billion already sold by the end of May. Companies such as Meta, Oracle, Alphabet and Amazon have also tapped bond markets or secured large loans to fund data-center construction, reflecting a broader trend of leveraging beyond cash reserves.

Analysts note that rising credit spreads and higher Treasury yields are affecting these issuances. Oracle, rated Baa2 by Moody's, is projected to burn up to $28 billion of free cash flow in 2026, while Alphabet and Meta, though still able to borrow on favorable terms, face tighter cash flows as capital expenditures increase.

The timing coincides with the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting, where new chair Kevin Warsh kept the target rate at 3.5%-3.75% and withdrew forward guidance, signaling a more hawkish stance. Treasury yields rose following the announcement, and the S&P 500 fell 1.2%, according to the Financial Times.

"The Fed will deliver price stability," Warsh said, emphasizing a shift away from the more accommodative approach of his predecessor.

Higher borrowing costs could impact the economics of data-center projects, which previously benefited from low-interest financing. While demand for high-quality credit remains strong, the cost of capital is set to increase, potentially slowing the pace of AI infrastructure expansion.

The interdependence of cloud providers, data-center builders, and chip manufacturers creates a feedback loop: firms borrow to build facilities that purchase Nvidia chips, Nvidia raises its own debt, and investors continue to fund the ecosystem based on projected AI revenue growth. This cycle relies on sustained cash flows and timely project execution; any delays or constraints could affect the risk profile of these companies.

Analysts caution that treating AI-related debt as a peripheral issue because of the borrowers' brand names overlooks the underlying financial exposure. The shift adds considerations of debt duration, refinancing risk and central-bank policy to the traditional technology investment analysis.

With the Fed indicating possible further rate hikes, the AI buildout now faces dual pressures: the industry race for capacity and the bond-market environment shaped by investor expectations of inflation and interest rates. Nvidia successfully completed its financing, but the broader ability of tech firms to continue issuing debt under tighter monetary conditions remains uncertain.
