NTSB Investigates Missouri Skydiving Plane Crash That Killed 12

Summary

Federal investigators are examining a Pacific Aerospace 750XL that crashed shortly after takeoff from Butler Memorial Airport, killing the pilot and 11 skydivers, including a United States Parachute Association official.

Federal investigators arrived at the crash site near Butler, Missouri, on Monday, a day after a single-engine turboprop carrying a pilot and 11 skydivers crashed and burned shortly after takeoff, killing all on board. The aircraft, operated by Skydive Kansas City, reportedly stalled at about 100 feet altitude and descended nose-first, according to airport manager Dennis Jacobs. Witnesses said the plane made an abrupt left turn before the impact.

The United States Parachute Association confirmed that its technology director, Jen Sharp, was among those killed. Sharp, who had logged more than 6,800 jumps since 1989 and taught instructors, was described by the association’s executive director as a “remarkable force” whose passion for the sport was matched by her dedication to its community.

The National Transportation Safety Board said a preliminary report is expected in about a month. While weather does not appear to have been a factor, investigators noted the aircraft lacked a flight-data recorder and will examine the wreckage for mechanical clues. The NTSB has also expressed concerns about the adequacy of oversight for skydiving operators, a point the Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing through a newly formed committee.

Skydive Kansas City issued a statement expressing sympathy for the families of the victims and noting the company’s compliance with United States Parachute Association safety standards and FAA maintenance requirements. The Pacific Aerospace 750XL model is commonly used in skydiving for its short-runway performance, and the specific aircraft had completed nine successful flights in the days before the accident.
