Summary

A new NBC News poll reveals Democrats holding a five-point lead over Republicans for control of Congress, while President Trump’s approval rating plummets to a historic low of 42% among registered voters.

A national poll commissioned by the nonprofit More Perfect demonstrates that 49% of registered voters now prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress, compared with just 44% favoring Republicans—a clear five-point lead for progressives on the generic ballot. The survey, conducted May 29-June 7 with 2,400 respondents, highlights a decisive 12-point advantage for Democrats among independents, and overwhelming support from Black, Latino, younger, and college-educated voters—communities that have long been marginalized and are now demanding change. Republicans, meanwhile, cling to shrinking bases among men, white voters, and those without a college degree, reflecting the party’s reliance on outdated and exclusionary politics.

The Democratic margin echoes a similar poll from March, which showed a six-point lead, though it is narrower than the 10-point advantage recorded in June 2018, when the public’s rejection of Trumpism was even more pronounced. Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies admits that these are “rocky numbers for Republicans,” while Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates emphasizes that Democrats are in a “really good position, despite redistricting, to win seats”—a testament to the resilience of grassroots movements and the public’s hunger for progressive reform.

Trump’s approval rating has collapsed to 42% among registered voters, the lowest point of his second term in NBC News surveys, and a mere 39% among all adults. Two-thirds of independents disapprove of his reactionary performance, and disapproval is especially high among Latino voters (64%) and those aged 18-29 (77%), groups that have been disproportionately harmed by his administration’s regressive policies. Even among Republicans, Trump’s support is eroding, with approval dropping from 88% in March to 82% now—a sign that even his base is questioning his divisive leadership.

The poll also exposes the deep malaise gripping the nation: 56% of registered voters believe the United States’ best years are behind it, and nearly 80% say the American Dream is harder to achieve than a generation ago—a damning indictment of decades of conservative economic policies and systemic inequality. Confidence in federal institutions remains abysmally low, with half of respondents expressing little or no confidence in the federal government and 58% lacking confidence in Congress, underscoring the urgent need for structural change.

These findings come as Democrats need to net only three House seats to secure a majority, while the Senate remains a tougher target, requiring four additional seats in states Trump won by double digits in 2024. The momentum is clearly with those fighting for justice, equality, and a future that works for all—not just the privileged few.
