Woman critically injured in shark attack off Coogee Beach, Sydney
A 35-year-old woman was severely wounded by a white shark while swimming near Coogee Beach and was rescued by a lifeguard and bystanders before being airlifted to hospital.
A 35-year-old woman suffered critical injuries after a white shark attacked her about 30 metres from Coogee Beach in Sydney on Saturday morning. Lifeguard Charlie Verco, who was on a paddleboard nearby, reached the scene at 11:15 a.m., helped the victim cling to his board and, with assistance from other beachgoers, brought her to shore. An off-duty doctor and other witnesses applied tourniquets to a 30-centimetre bite on her thigh and a similar wound on her arm before she was taken to a nearby rugby field and then flown by helicopter to a hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Police confirmed the shark measured approximately 3.5 metres. The incident follows three recent spearfishing-diver deaths and a January fatal shark bite on a 12-year-old boy, contributing to a total of four shark-related fatalities in Australia this year. National data show an average of two to three fatal shark attacks annually since 2000, with numbers rising as coastal recreation grows.
