Australian shark attack survivor thanks supporters as she continues recovery
Leah Stewart, 35, who lost an arm after a June shark attack at Coogee Beach, said she feels she has been given a second chance at life and expressed gratitude for the more than AU$550,000 raised for her care.
Leah Stewart, a 35-year-old mother of one, survived a shark attack on Coogee Beach in Sydney in June that resulted in multiple bite wounds and the amputation of an arm. After being placed in an induced coma and undergoing several surgeries, she said her recovery has been progressing well.
In a post on Monday, Stewart thanked family, friends and strangers who contributed to an online fundraiser that raised over AU$550,000, enabling her to continue treatment at home and consider further medical options. > "After what has been an incredibly difficult few months, I'm so happy that I've progressed enough to build some independence, and I can finally see some light after all of this," she wrote. > "I feel like I've been given a second chance at life, and I'm not going to waste it."
She noted that the support she received has helped her stay focused on recovery rather than bitterness. The fundraiser has now closed, with the funds earmarked for ongoing care.
The incident adds to a series of shark attacks in Australia this year, which have included several fatalities in Queensland and Western Australia.
