The contracts, worth nearly $1 billion, also gave Blue Origin four missions for the Mark 1 lander, including the VIPER rover launch planned for 2027.

The plan relied on Blue Origin’s New Glenn heavy-lift rocket, which suffered a static-fire test explosion on May 28 at Launch Complex 36. The blast destroyed a lightning tower and a transporter-erector, and bent structural beams, though no injuries were reported. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp said the company had regained partial access to the pad and was developing a rebuild plan.

The incident is expected to keep New Glenn out of service for many months, possibly a year, forcing NASA to reconsider launch options for Moon Base 1 and related missions. Alternatives such as ULA’s Vulcan or SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy would require significant modifications to accommodate the Blue Moon lander’s liquid-oxygen and liquid-hydrogen propellants.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency would work with Blue Origin to restore New Glenn capability and emphasized that NASA would take a more active role in advancing lunar-landing hardware. The agency’s Artemis 3 crewed landing, slated for mid-2027, may need to be delayed or restructured if New Glenn remains unavailable, potentially affecting the timing of Artemis 4.
