Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, passed away on Thursday at the age of 41. His family confirmed that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming complications.

On Wednesday, Busch experienced shortness of breath and was coughing up blood while at a General Motors training facility in North Carolina. A 911 call described him as very hot and feeling like he was going to pass out.

Busch had recently competed in the NASCAR All-Star Race and won a Craftsman Truck Series race in Dover. He was scheduled to race in the upcoming Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Known as "Rowdy," Busch achieved 234 victories across NASCAR's three national series, the most in the sport's history. He won Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019.

In a joint statement, the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing, and NASCAR said, "A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans."

Richard Childress Racing announced the temporary retirement of Busch's No. 8 car, reserving it until his 11-year-old son, Brexton, is ready to race.

Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha; son, Brexton; daughter, Lennix; and his parents. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
