Long Island Rail Road Workers Strike, Halting Service

Ամփոփում

Long Island Rail Road workers have initiated a strike, leading to a complete shutdown of the commuter rail system.

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), North America's largest commuter rail system, ceased operations as unionized workers initiated a strike. The walkout involves five unions representing approximately 3,500 employees, including locomotive engineers, machinists, and signalmen. The strike follows unsuccessful contract negotiations with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), primarily over wage increases and healthcare premiums.

The unions are demanding a 16% wage increase over four years to address inflation and rising living costs. The MTA has countered with an offer of at least a 9.5% raise over three years, plus an effective 4.5% raise in the fourth year. MTA CEO Janno Lieber stated that the agency "cannot responsibly make a deal that implodes MTA's budget."

Governor Kathy Hochul criticized the unions' decision to strike, describing it as "reckless." She urged commuters to work from home if possible and announced that the MTA would provide limited shuttle bus services during weekday rush hours for essential workers.

The strike affects approximately 300,000 daily commuters who rely on the LIRR for travel between Long Island and New York City. The disruption is expected to increase road traffic and complicate access to events such as the NBA playoffs and the Yankees-Mets baseball series.

Union leaders have expressed regret over the impact on commuters but emphasize the necessity of the strike. Kevin Sexton, national vice president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, stated, "We are truly sorry that we are in this situation."

This marks the first LIRR strike since 1994. No new negotiations have been scheduled at this time.
