Five Italian Divers Die in Maldives Cave Exploration

Resumen

Five Italian nationals, including a university professor and her daughter, died while exploring underwater caves in the Maldives' Vaavu Atoll.

Five Italian nationals have died during a scuba diving expedition in the Maldives' Vaavu Atoll, according to Italy's foreign ministry. The group was exploring underwater caves at a depth of approximately 50 meters when the incident occurred.

The victims include Monica Montefalcone, an associate ecology professor at the University of Genoa; her daughter, Giorgia Sommacal; research fellow Muriel Oddenino; and marine biology graduate Federico Gualtieri.

The divers were reported missing after failing to resurface during a morning dive near Alimathaa Island. Search and recovery teams located one body inside a cave extending to a depth of about 60 meters, with the remaining four divers believed to be within the same cave system.

Maldivian authorities have described the incident as the worst single diving accident in the nation's history. An investigation into the exact circumstances is ongoing, with rough sea conditions complicating recovery efforts.

Italy's foreign ministry is coordinating with Maldivian officials to assist in the recovery and repatriation of the victims' bodies. The Italian Embassy in Colombo is providing consular assistance to the victims' families.
