Bodies of Four Italian Divers Located in Maldives Cave

Maldivian authorities have located the bodies of four Italian divers who went missing last week while exploring an underwater cave in Vaavu Atoll. The divers were found inside a cave approximately 50 meters deep, exceeding the Maldives' recommended recreational diving limit of 30 meters.

The victims have been identified as Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of ecology at the University of Genoa; her daughter, Giorgia Sommacal; marine biologist Federico Gualtieri; researcher Muriel Oddenino; and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, whose body was recovered earlier.

The search and recovery efforts faced significant challenges, including adverse weather conditions and the tragic death of Maldivian military diver Mohamed Mahudhee, who died from decompression sickness during the operation.

Three Finnish expert divers arrived in the Maldives to assist in mapping a new search strategy for the recovery of the bodies.

The cause of the divers' deaths remains under investigation.
