Microsoft and OpenAI Revise Partnership, Ending Exclusivity

摘要

Microsoft and OpenAI have restructured their partnership, ending exclusivity and allowing OpenAI to collaborate with other cloud providers.

Microsoft and OpenAI have restructured their partnership, ending the exclusivity that previously limited OpenAI's AI models to Microsoft's Azure cloud platform. Under the new agreement, OpenAI can now offer its products across multiple cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. Despite this change, Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner, with OpenAI products continuing to launch first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot support the necessary capabilities.

The revised terms also grant Microsoft a non-exclusive license to OpenAI's intellectual property for models and products through 2032. Additionally, Microsoft will no longer pay a revenue share to OpenAI, while OpenAI will continue to pay Microsoft a revenue share until 2030, subject to a total cap.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed confidence in the updated partnership, stating, "We feel good about our partnership with OpenAI. I'm always very focused on any partnership and ensuring that there's a win-win construct at all times." He emphasized that Microsoft retains access to OpenAI's intellectual property, including its models and agent products, without additional payments.

Addressing concerns about potential competition, Nadella highlighted that Microsoft offers a broad selection of AI models, allowing customers to choose the right model for their workload across various providers, including OpenAI and Anthropic. He noted that over 10,000 customers have used more than one model, underscoring the company's commitment to providing diverse AI solutions.
