Elon Musk and Sam Altman Face Off in Court Over OpenAI's Evolution

Elon Musk and Sam Altman are set to begin a trial over allegations that OpenAI shifted from its original nonprofit mission to a for-profit model, with Musk seeking Altman's removal and funds directed to OpenAI's charitable arm.

The trial, commencing Monday in Oakland, California, centers on Musk's 2024 lawsuit against OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman. Musk alleges that the company deviated from its original nonprofit mission by transitioning to a for-profit model without his knowledge.

Musk, who invested approximately $38 million in OpenAI between 2015 and 2017, is no longer seeking personal damages. Instead, he requests that funds be directed to OpenAI's charitable arm and that Altman be removed from the board.

OpenAI, now valued at $852 billion and backed by Microsoft, dismisses Musk's claims as attempts to hinder their growth and promote his rival company, xAI.

U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will oversee the trial, with jury selection beginning Monday. The case is expected to provide insights into the early development of AI and the dissolution of Musk and Altman's partnership.
