US President Donald Trump mentioned that additional sanctions against Russia could be considered, as Moscow continues to reject cease-fire proposals. Speaking on July 4, Trump stated, "You know, we talk about sanctions a lot and he understands that it may be coming."

Trump also referenced his earlier statement expressing disappointment with his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 3.

Observations on Cease-fire Negotiations

Some observers have noted that President Putin appears reluctant to agree to a cease-fire, with the belief that Russia is making progress in the conflict. Russia has experienced losses in personnel and economic challenges due to increased defense spending.

Trump commented on the situation, expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing conflict.

Communication Between US and Ukrainian Leaders

Earlier, Trump described a recent conversation with Zelenskyy as positive. Zelenskyy has consistently requested that the United States impose further sanctions on Russia to encourage negotiations.

Since taking office in January, Trump has not introduced new sanctions on Russia, and enforcement has reportedly been relaxed. Trump has stated that additional sanctions could affect peace negotiations.

On July 5, Zelenskyy described his recent discussion with Trump as the most productive to date, particularly regarding air defense. He expressed appreciation for the willingness to assist and noted the importance of the Patriot missile system for protection against ballistic threats.

The two leaders also discussed other topics, with further meetings planned between officials from both countries. It was not immediately clear if any specific outcomes resulted from the talks.

When asked about the provision of additional Patriot air-defense missiles to Ukraine, Trump replied, "They're going to need them for defense...They're going to need something because they're being hit pretty hard."

On July 4, Trump also discussed Patriot missiles with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Germany has indicated it may purchase Patriots from the US and provide them to Ukraine.

Agreements on Drone Production and Defense Support

Zelenskyy previously announced an agreement with a US company to increase joint efforts on drone production, including interceptors. He stated that an agreement was signed with Swift Beat, an American company, during his visit to Denmark on July 3. The agreement covers the supply of drones this year and the possibility of expanding production next year.

Swift Beat, founded by Eric Schmidt, specializes in AI-powered drones and has collaborated with Ukrainian engineers and military officials. The company could not be reached for comment.

Zelenskyy also highlighted agreements with European partners, including Denmark, for co-production of weapons. He noted that this was the first significant effort to utilize Ukrainian production capabilities abroad and anticipated similar agreements in the future. Sweden and Latvia have also agreed to provide new defense support packages.

Recent Military Developments

Russia has increased air attacks on Kyiv and other cities in recent weeks. On the night of July 3-4, Russian forces launched a large drone attack. In response, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Russian air defense intercepted four Ukrainian drones near the capital, temporarily affecting airport operations. Local reports indicated that over 170 flights were delayed and around 50 were canceled at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport.

Russia's Defense Ministry stated that air-defense units destroyed 48 Ukrainian drones over a period of just over five hours on the evening of July 5.
