Allbirds to Be Acquired by American Exchange Group for $39 Million
Sustainable footwear brand Allbirds has agreed to sell its assets to American Exchange Group for $39 million, marking a significant decline from its peak valuation.
Sustainable footwear company Allbirds has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its intellectual property and certain assets to American Exchange Group for approximately $39 million. This transaction, subject to shareholder approval, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, with net proceeds anticipated to be distributed to shareholders in the third quarter.
Founded in 2015, Allbirds gained prominence with its eco-friendly wool sneakers, becoming a favorite among Silicon Valley professionals. The company went public in November 2021, raising nearly $400 million and achieving a peak valuation exceeding $4 billion.
However, Allbirds faced challenges in recent years, including rapid expansion into physical retail and product categories that did not resonate with its core customer base. These strategic missteps led to declining revenues and mounting losses.
American Exchange Group, a privately held firm specializing in accessories design, licensing, and manufacturing, owns brands such as Aerosoles and White Mountain. The acquisition of Allbirds aligns with its strategy to diversify and strengthen its portfolio in the footwear sector.
The sale price of $39 million represents a significant decrease from Allbirds' initial public offering and peak valuation, highlighting the volatility and challenges within the direct-to-consumer retail market.
