Allbirds Transitions to AI Infrastructure, Rebrands as NewBird AI
Allbirds announces a strategic shift from footwear to AI compute infrastructure, rebranding as NewBird AI and securing $50 million in financing.
Allbirds, Inc. has announced a strategic shift from its footwear business to artificial intelligence (AI) compute infrastructure, rebranding itself as NewBird AI. The company has secured a $50 million convertible financing facility from an institutional investor to support this transition, with the deal expected to close in the second quarter of 2026.
In March, Allbirds agreed to sell its brand and footwear assets to American Exchange Group for approximately $39 million. American Exchange Group plans to continue operating under the Allbirds brand, ensuring the legacy of the company's products.
Following the announcement, Allbirds' stock experienced a significant surge, with shares rising over 370% shortly after the market opened on Wednesday.
NewBird AI intends to utilize the initial capital to acquire high-performance GPU assets, aiming to provide dedicated AI compute capacity to customers. The company's long-term vision is to become a fully integrated GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) and AI-native cloud solutions provider.
The financing and asset sale are subject to stockholder approval, with a Special Meeting scheduled for May 18, 2026. If approved, a special dividend is anticipated during the third quarter of 2026 for stockholders of record as of May 20, 2026.
