NASA's Artemis II Moon Rocket Arrives at Launch Pad Ahead of April Mission

सारांश

NASA's Artemis II mission progresses as the SLS rocket reaches Launch Pad 39B, with a crewed lunar flyby scheduled for early April.

NASA's Artemis II mission has reached a significant milestone with the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft arriving at Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center. This development keeps the mission on track for a potential launch as early as April 1, 2026.

The Artemis II mission will be the first crewed flight under NASA's Artemis program, aiming to send four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon. The crew comprises NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman (Commander), Victor Glover (Pilot), Christina Koch (Mission Specialist), and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist).

Prior to the rollout, engineers addressed technical challenges, including replacing an electrical harness on the SLS flight termination system and resolving a helium flow issue in the rocket's upper stage. These efforts ensured the rocket's readiness for the upcoming mission.

The rollout commenced at 12:20 a.m. EDT on Friday, March 20, with the 322-foot-tall, 11-million-pound rocket transported by the crawler-transporter 2. The journey covered four miles over approximately 11 hours, culminating in the rocket's secure placement at the launch pad by 11:21 a.m. EDT.

Concurrently, the Artemis II crew entered pre-flight quarantine in Houston on Wednesday, March 18, as part of standard health stabilization procedures to ensure they remain free of illness before launch. They will continue this quarantine at Kennedy Space Center until liftoff.

NASA is targeting the Artemis II launch window from April 1 to April 6, with additional opportunities later in the month. This mission marks a pivotal step toward returning humans to the Moon and establishing a sustainable presence under the Artemis program.
