Hubble Telescope Captures Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) Fragmentation

The Hubble Space Telescope has unexpectedly observed comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) breaking into multiple fragments, providing rare insights into cometary disintegration.

The Hubble Space Telescope has serendipitously captured images of comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) disintegrating into several fragments approximately 400 million kilometers from Earth. This observation occurred while Hubble was focusing on a different target, making the event particularly fortuitous.

Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS), not to be confused with interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, was observed breaking apart into at least four pieces, each developing its own coma. The images were taken shortly after the comet's perihelion on October 8, 2025, when it passed closer to the Sun than Mercury's orbit. The intense solar heating likely contributed to its fragmentation.

John Noonan, a research professor at Auburn University and co-investigator on the study, remarked, "Sometimes the best science happens by accident." He noted the slim chances of observing such an event, emphasizing the significance of this unexpected discovery.

The team estimates that the comet, initially about 8 kilometers wide, began disintegrating approximately eight days before Hubble's observations. The telescope captured three 20-second exposures from November 8 to November 10, 2025, during which one of the smaller fragments further broke apart.

Principal investigator Dennis Bodewits, also from Auburn University, highlighted the importance of studying such events: "Comets are leftovers of the era of Solar System formation, so they’re made of ‘old stuff’ – the primordial materials that made our solar system." He added that by examining a comet's breakup, scientists can access ancient material that has not been processed, offering insights into the early Solar System.

The team plans to analyze spectroscopic data from Hubble to further investigate the comet's chemical composition, which may provide additional information about the origins and evolution of our Solar System.
