Reflect Orbital Plans to Illuminate Earth with Space-Based Mirrors
Reflect Orbital, a U.S. startup, aims to deploy satellites equipped with large mirrors to reflect sunlight onto Earth's surface at night, potentially enhancing solar energy production and providing illumination for various applications.
Reflect Orbital, a California-based startup founded in 2021, is developing a constellation of satellites designed to reflect sunlight onto Earth's surface during nighttime hours. The company's goal is to enhance solar energy production and provide illumination for events, construction sites, and remote communities.
The initial phase involves launching a prototype satellite equipped with an 18-meter by 18-meter deployable mirror made from mylar plastic. This satellite aims to demonstrate the feasibility of redirecting sunlight to specific areas on Earth.
Reflect Orbital has secured over $28 million in funding from investors, including Sequoia Capital and Lux Capital. The company has also been awarded a $1.25 million Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX to advance its reflector technology.
However, the project has raised concerns among astronomers and environmentalists. Critics argue that the reflective satellites could interfere with astronomical observations, disrupt circadian rhythms, and affect wildlife behavior. DarkSky International has expressed opposition to the project, citing potential risks to the environment and public health.
Reflect Orbital plans to collaborate with astronomers during its demonstration mission to minimize impacts on observations and the night sky. The company is also exploring applications for its technology in search and rescue missions and providing light to areas experiencing prolonged darkness, such as Arctic regions during winter months.
